Vivienne Gillard
artist
Vivienne graduated from St Martin's with a Fine Art BA Hons, returning to Cornwall in 2007 working mainly
as a ceramic artist. Her evocative sculptural clay works often incorporate new media and audio elements;
she is perpetually searching for another extension, another permutation, another exploration, constantly pushing the boundries of the clay. Fascinated by the processes of ceramics and the possibilities of the most basic elements - earth, fire, water and air Vivienne seeks to realise the same emotion, strength, wildness and beauty that she finds in the Cornish landscapes and coastlines where she lives. She strives for her work to be not a mere abstraction of nature but rather an actual expression of it. Vivienne uses local Cornish earthenware and grogged stoneware clays, her colours are a combination of oxides and Cornish tin glazes, often incorporating inks and waxes to the finishing processes.
Influenced by the rich ceramic traditions of Africa, Vivienne also produces a wide range of ceramic udu drums - these simple, tactile organic shapes produce deep, fluid, percussive sounds.
December 2010 Vivienne set up studio in The Old Bakery Studios in Truro where she continues her work.
Most Fridays she teaches 'Gifted and Talented' primary school children art (SMarties) at a local school and also holds weekly Saturday art club sessions - 'Doodles', for children. Vivienne also holds Life Drawing Sessions on Thursday evenings at The Old Bakery Studios.
